Why LGBT Can't Disown Its QIA+ Children
Nothing comes from nothing. Nothing ever could . . .
In a world without God, there is only power.
In days like these — where adorable sentiments like “Communism can still work if it’s done right!” actually hold weight — simple facts like the one above need to be stated more frequently. And often. And also regularly, if possible.
The dilemma for those who reject transcendence is that we still need a stable bank of values from which truth, beauty, law, and order can be withdrawn. The foundations for prosperity and freedom in the West didn’t just spontaneously happen one day after a few rounds of mimosas at the annual founding father’s picnic. They emerged from the once widespread acknowledgement that just laws flow from a just constitution, and a just constitution flows from a just God.
Without an overarching structure for justice, there can be no underarching structure for municipal park bylaws. Now — most cities still have municiple park bylaws — but when push comes to shove, as in the case of tent cities, we see how quickly the house of cards falls. If there’s no Fundamental Being giving definition to reality, there’s also no fundamental reason why stealing my neighbour’s ATV is any worse than not stealing it. Or, when my neighbour knocks on my door asking why it’s parked in my driveway, why smiting him with a cinder block should be any more gracious than not doing so.
Of course, the accusation will be made of a reductio ad absurdum. But it isn’t absurd to say that if you jump off a cliff you’re eventually going to hit the bottom. The absurdity only takes place when someone in a white coat suggests you won’t.
For years we were promised that Darwin would help us grow up. That we would finally be able to leave behind the superstitions of our youth and grow to maturity amidst the bracing air of naturalism. And — well, we did grow. Just not up. If we did become more free, it was the freedom of the cliff-jumping man, who was free only to plummet to his death.
Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy.
Romans 1:28–32
Silicone Virtue
“All is not lost . . . the unconquerable will, and study of revenge, immortal hate, and the courage never to submit or yield.” - Lucifer, Paradise Lost
In the post-truth pandemonium which Romans outlines, one of the ways people try to recover some semblance of meaning is by wielding power over others. If the hope of actual happiness shrivels away like a old balloon, we can at least pursue the *zing* of forcing others to be as miserable as we are.
It just so happens that moral posturing is a particularly effective means of doing so.
Moral posturing happens when someone wants to appear moral without the headache of actual morality. Take the increasingly distended Bruce Jenner. For those who don’t know, about ten years ago Bruce decided it was time to cast-off on the mother-of-all mid-life crises. Four-score hair, skin, and bone adjustments later, “Caitlyn” walked into the hearts of Americans everywhere and has been gnawing like a cancer ever since.
Despite this sequence of very unserious decisions, Bruce has determined the world must take him, and his moral campaigning, very seriously.
But don’t take my word for it. Let’s hear it straight from the Woman of the Year:
“Today I publicly launched Fairness First PAC to fight the radical gender ideology, put parental rights at the forefront of education, and keep boys out of women’s sports.”
“Every day I am on the phone with lawmakers federal and state level, parents who have lost control of their kids to the state, women being attacked or invaded by sick radicals under the guise of being trans, and it is all in the name of ‘compassion’ by the left!”
“Re-upping this! SIGN THE PETITION! It is so important to fight for these girls. All proceeds raised from the petition will go to the women’s legal fees!”
“KIDS BELONG TO THEIR PARENTS / FAMILY NOT THE STATE!!!”
Now, any woman of the year already faces a steep climb on the road to be taken seriously. I frankly can’t even imagine what it’s like for a “woman” with more angles in her face than a Victorian garden shed.
Joking aside, we have to remember that this is the same man who has single-handedly done more to advance gender confusion than perhaps any other individual on the face of the planet. This same man is now trying to convince us he’s a champion for women’s rights. This same man is now trying to distinguish himself, and his house blend of compassion, from the increasingly hair-brained schemes of the left. This same man is now standing on the tracks, madly trying to flag down the crazy train he unleashed in the first place.
Jenner, no longer able to command respect as an athlete, is attempting to recover it by appealing to some imaginary moral high ground. But then — he’s used to playing pretend.
What we have in LGBT’s attempt to distance itself from QIA+ is a clear case of the pot calling the kettle black. Except that the pot is actually a spatula, and it’s angry at the toaster for calling itself a kettle. But you can’t condemn sin while at the same time being an agent of sin. You can’t draw a line in a pile of mud and say, “All the mud on THIS side of the line is cleaner than the mud on THAT side.”
You can’t reject God, and still have something to build on.
“How awful is goodness”
Even in this refuse pile of hypocrisy and lies, there’s an echo of something real. Because we are all made in the image of a righteous God, we can’t escape the commanding power of righteousness; even when it’s a false righteousness. Lucifer himself, in all his misery and degradation, was forced to acknowledge it: “Abashed the devil stood and felt how awful goodness is and saw Virtue in her shape how lovely: and pined his loss.”
He “pined its loss.” That’s a powerful statement. When we face the scrawny scarecrow of false virtue, we feel hollow. We feel diminished. We feel short-changed. We were led to believe there would actually be treasure in the treasure room, not rags and old soup cans.
It’s true that Christians must call out the demented posturing of evil, but that isn’t enough. We must win a jaded world with true righteousness. We must preach and live it, not only to expose the inferiority of evil, but to reveal the light of God’s goodness to us in Christ. We must live in such a way that our fellow image-bearers pine its loss and seek it as a priceless pearl.
And let’s pray for Bruce. If God can redeem a terrorist of the year in the Apostle Paul, a woman of the year should be no problem.
