Classics, they used to be called. They often read them as families, and those families often read them in communities, which provided a degree of social cohesion and (dare I say it?) “mental health” that is simply unfathomable today.

One of the books they read was John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress. This book, second in popularity throughout history only to the Bible, tells the story of the Christian journey from the City of Destruction to the Heavenly City. The story is an allegory, an earthy, episodic folk tale, and one that has resonated with the hearts of millions since its publication in 1678.

In this episode, we discuss this beloved story, and invite you to discover with us what has made Bunyan’s little book such an explosively popular “best-seller.”

Ep. 2: BEDE | How Christ Conquered the English

In the year of our Lord 597, the gospel of Jesus Christ came to the English, and the world has never been the same.

Jacob Leeming

In the year of our Lord 597, the gospel of Jesus Christ came to the English, and the world has never been the same. People who once practiced human sacrifice were brought to the knowledge of the true and living God. Pagans, who formerly knew only the utterance of barbarity, began to cry the Hebrew ‘Alleluia’. The effects of this event would thunder forth for the next 1400 years, bringing into being one of the greatest civilizations the world has ever seen. Join us as we discuss this great and momentous tale told by one of England’s most beloved historians, Bede.

Dominion Press is a reader-supported publication. Centering on the figure of Beowulf, this story recounts man’s futile struggle against a dark and hostile age: an age of blood-lust and vengeance, of monsters and ruin.

But as it does, it primes our hearts for the arrival of the King whose light was about to rise on this monstrous world. The King who would speak peace to the nations and whose reign would be from sea to sea, from the River to the ends of the earth.

The ancient Danes had yet to hear of this great King, but His coming was as sure as the dawn. As John said, the true Light was coming into the world—indeed, it was here already. And that Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.
